Once relegated to the dingy and dark spaces of the local tavern or bar, the pub table has taken the country by storm. It is rapidly becoming one of the "must have" pieces of furniture in homes across the country.

One doesn't have to wonder why? Anyone who has wiled away an evening sipping a beer, martini or mojito at the local bar knows that a pub table is a perfect place for entertaining and lively conversation.

Here are some helpful tips to help you pick the perfect pub table for your home:

Height

The standard pub table is 36 inches stall, about the same height as a kitchen countertop. The perfect barstool for this table is 24 inches. If you want something a little higher, spring for a standard pub table - 42 inches tall. These need a barstool that's 30 inches. If you want some flexibility, you can go with a metal table with a center pedestal for adjusting the height. Just be sure your barstools can be adjusted too.

Seating

If you only plan to seat 2 to 4 people regularly, a tabletop 24" across should suffice for your pub table. If you want something a little larger, 30 inches will comfortably seat 4, either for dinner or a rousing game of cards or dice.

Location

The location of the pub table can influence the style you buy, the materials and the size. Be sure you have the location in mind before you buy. If it's going to be for dining, you want to place it in the breakfast area or a nook in the great room. If you live in sunnier climes, you may want to put it in your sunroom, Florida room or out on a covered portion of the deck. Manufacturers also make a pub tables for the outdoors, but that's an entirely different story.

If you plan to use your pub table regularly, be sure you get one that is well made and which won't start to wobble or fall apart on your after a while. Many less expensive tables look good in the store, but won't hold up to regular wear and tear.
